예술은 언제나 시간과 깊게 얽혀 있다. 시간은 작품의 생성 조건이자 해석의 문맥이며, 때로는 재료 자체에 흔적으로 남는다. 〈향의 기억: Part One〉은 시간에 대한 서술이자 해석의 시도이며, 32년 간 BHAK가 축적해온 동시대미술 전시의 측정을 오감 중 가장 원초적 감각인 후각에 주목해 ‘향’이라는 감각적 개념을 매개로 풀어내는 전시이다. 전시는 고정된 연대기적 틀에 갇히지 않고, 예술의 시간성을 다양한 층위(시각적, 물질적, 감각적)에서 구성하며, 예술작품은 기억의 구조이자 시간의 축적물이라는 전제 위에서 진행된다. 또한 BHAK의 시그니처 향 ‘Sol’을 공간에 발향하여 전시를 관람하는 내내 향이 함께 하는 경험을 선사한다. 향수의 구성 방식에서 차용한 세 가지 노트 구조—헤드(Head), 하트(Heart), 베이스(Base)—는 시간의 흐름에 따른 감각적 체험의 층위를 은유하며, 전시는 연속성을 갖고 이어진다. 이번 <향의 기억: Part One>에서는 첫 만남을 담당하는 ‘헤드 노트’로 구성된다.
시간의 흐름 – 선형적 시간의 시각화(헤드 노트)
첫 번째 파트는 시간의 직진성과 연대기적 배열에 중점을 둔다. 첫 향을 맡는 순간 강렬하고 직관적으로 다가오는 헤드 노트처럼 전시의 전체 구성이 하나의 연속적인 시간을 표현하는 것 같은 느낌을 주도록 구성되었다. ‘Sol’의 헤드노트를 담당하는 세 가지 축인 카나비스, 대나무, 후추의 톡 쏘는 듯 하면서도 청량한 느낌도 담아내었다. 이번 전시에 참여한 11인의 작가들은 각자의 작품을 통해 시간의 흐름과 기억의 흔적을 다채롭게 보여준다. 작품들은 각각의 제작 시기와 맥락을 반영하며, 작품이 시간 속에서 어떻게 살아남고 기억되는가에 대한 구조적 질문을 제기한다. 이러한 선형적 구성은 예술사를 기술하는 전통적 방법론을 참조하면서도, 개별 작품이 지닌 시간의 밀도와 서사 구조를 함께 보여준다. 또한 시간의 선형성과 예술 실천의 비연속성이 어떻게 긴장 속에서 공존하는지를 시각적으로 제시한다.
먼저 브리타니 패닝, 김세중, 설경철, 한영욱 4인의 작품은 시간의 흐름을 직관적으로 드러낸다. 브리타니 패닝과 김세중의 작품은 우리가 시간의 변화를 가장 잘 인지할 수 있는 풍경을 자신들만의 관점으로 제시하며 시간의 흐름과 그 순간만의 특별함을 조명한다. 악보 위에 흐르듯 그려진 시계와 악기가 눈에 띄는 설경철의 작품은 연극의 막이 넘어가듯 음표와 시침, 분침을 따라 하나씩 흘러가되 쌓여가는 시간을 표현하고 있다. 한영욱의 사실적 묘사로 탄생한 소녀와 노인은 그들 사이에 놓인 시간의 간격을 보여주지만, 공통적으로 착용하고 있는 빨간 모자는 그 시간들을 연결하며 그 시간에 녹아든 서사를 상상해 보게끔 한다.
다음으로 권부문, 캐롤 퓨어맨, ThankYouX 3인의 작품은 시간의 흐름을 따라 이어온 ‘여정’을 떠올리게 한다. 푸른 하늘을 순간적으로 포착해 촬영한 권부문의 작품은 다시는 마주할 수 없는 찰나의 순간을 조명한다. 비행이라는 일정 중 시시각각 변화하는 하늘은 계속 존재하는 듯 하나 똑 같은 순간은 반복해서 만날 수 없다. 그 순간의 점들이 모여 시간의 선으로 이어지고 계속해서 이어지는 인생을 구성해감을 작품은 보여주고 있다. 캐롤 퓨어맨의 실제 사람과도 같은 사실적인 조각은 바닷가에 들어갔다 갓 나온 것 처럼 온 몸에 물기가 있다. 하지만 여성은 굉장히 편안하고 정적인 상태를 유지하고 있다. 역설적이어 보이는 조각의 모습은 빠름과 느림, 역동성과 정적인 상태 사이의 간극을 느끼게 하며 그 사이를 시간의 굴곡으로 채우게 한다. 캐롤의 조각은 선형적으로 흐르는 시간에도 높낮이가 있으며 늘 같은 속도로 움직이지 않음을 연상시킨다. ThankYouX는 앞서 살펴 본 두 가지의 길을 포함해 여러 갈래의 시간의 길들을 어우르는 역할을 한다. 강렬한 원색들의 향연이 펼쳐지는 작품은 어우러지지 않을 것 같은 강한 색들이 한데 어우러져 하나의 하모니를 이루어낸다. 이는 각기 다른 개성을 가진 향료가 만나 이룬 조화를 이룬 것과 같다.
마지막은 한국현대미술의 거장이 된 곽훈, 전광영, 박서보, 김창열 4인의 작품이 소개된다. 전시의 마무리를 담당하는 부분으로 응접실 안에 프라이빗하게 구성되어 관람의 밀도를 높였다. 한국 실험현대미술을 이끈 곽훈, 한지를 활용한 독창적인 조형세계를 펼치는 전광영, 수양과 반복의 미를 담은 단색화를 이끈 박서보와 김창열은 모두에게 유한한 시간의 마지막 챕터에서 시간에 구애되지 않고 이어지는 여운을 남긴다. 기존의 틀을 벗어나 새로운 방향성을 제시하고 이끌어온 이들의 작품은 관람객들에게 잊혀지지 않는 강렬한 첫 만남으로 기억돼 ‘영원’의 영역에 남을 것이다.
BHAK 시그니처 향 ‘Sol’
BHAK는 일상에서 향유할 수 있는 예술 컬렉팅과 감각 확장의 일환으로 2023년 3월, 개관 30주년을 맞이하여 시그니처 향 ‘Sol’을 출시했다.
BHAK의 시그니처 향 ‘Sol’은 시공간적 경험이 주가 되는 전시공간에서 후각적 만족감과 잔향이 남기는 오랜 여운을 함께 얻을 수 있도록 기획되었다. 전문 조향사 김활과의 협업으로 안전하면서도 고급 향료들을 조합하여 고품질의 발향이 뛰어난 ‘퍼퓸’ 등급에 속한다.
‘Sol’은 인위적인 향을 배제하고 묵직한 흙과 나무의 향을 특징으로 한다. 이는 작품이 완성되기 위해 필요한 요소들의 시작 지점과 맞닿아 있다. 또한 동양철학의 근본이 되는 음양오행 중 ‘목(木)’을 강조한 향과 바틀 디자인으로 깊게 뿌리내리고 뻗어나가는 나무를 상징하기도 한다.
Sol과 Perfume의 로고 디자인은 대를 이어 갤러리를 이어가고 있는 BHAK박종혁 대표의 손글씨로서 ‘Sol’의 기획의도와 추구하는 방향을 드러내고 있다.

Art has always been deeply entangled with time. Time defines the conditions of creation, offers a context for interpretation, and often leaves tangible traces within a work itself. The Memoir of the Scent: Part One explores this relationship through an unexpected lens—scent, one of our most instinctive senses. Anchored in the sensory dimension of smell, this exhibition offers a layered reading of contemporary art curated over 32 years by BHAK.
Rather than adhering to a strict chronology, the exhibition constructs time through visual, material, and sensory dimensions. Here, artworks are viewed as vessels of memory and sedimentations of time. To enhance this experience, BHAK’s signature scent “Sol” is diffused throughout the space, making scent an active presence during one’s visit.
Inspired by the structure of perfume—head, heart, and base notes—this exhibition unfolds in phases, each suggesting a sensory narrative through the passage of time. Part One begins with the “head note,” a first impression that sets the tone and leaves a vivid mark.
The Flow of Time - Visualizing Linear Time (Head Note)
This first part emphasizes the linear progression of time. Like the initial burst of scent from a head note—bright and immediate—the exhibition is structured to evoke the sensation of continuous time. The three opening elements of “Sol”—cannabis, bamboo, and black pepper—are simultaneously crisp and invigorating, echoing the visual tone of the works on view.
Brittany Fanning, Kim Se-Joong, Seol Kyung Chul, and Han Young Wook each visualize time’s passage in intuitive ways. Fanning and Kim present landscapes as evolving moments, offering their own unique perspectives on how time is felt in nature. Seol’s flowing clocks and instruments seem to follow the rhythm of time like musical notes, marking its passage through visual cadence. Han’s lifelike portraits of a young girl and elderly man highlight the gap between ages, yet the red hat they both wear ties them together, evoking an imagined story that bridges time.
Works by BOOMOON, Carole Feuerman, and ThankYouX speak to the notion of time as a journey. BOOMOON captures fleeting images of the sky mid-flight—moments that can never be precisely repeated, yet collectively form a continuum. Feuerman’s hyper-realistic sculpture of a woman emerging from water, serene and composed, paradoxically evokes both stillness and movement. Her work reminds us that even within linear time, there are peaks, valleys, and pauses. ThankYouX ties these ideas together. His vibrant abstract compositions bring together clashing primary colors in unexpected harmony—like distinct scent notes blending into a single accord. His work metaphorically captures the diverse, intertwining paths that time can take.
The final segment presents works by four seminal figures in Korean contemporary art: Kwak Hoon, Chun Kwang Young, Park Seo-Bo, and Kim Tschang-Yeul. Displayed in a more intimate setting, these works invite deep contemplation.
From Kwon’s experimental forms to Chun’s inventive use of Hanji, and from Park’s meditative monochromes to Kim’s ethereal water drops, these works transcend the present. They carry the legacy of decades past while pointing to something timeless. Positioned at the close of the exhibition, they leave a lasting impression—an echo of eternity within the frame of finite time.
BHAK Signature Scent: “Sol”
In celebration of its 30th anniversary in March 2023, BHAK introduced Sol, its signature fragrance. Conceived as a multisensory extension of the gallery’s curatorial ethos, Sol enhances the exhibition experience by evoking both atmosphere and memory.
Developed in collaboration with master perfumer Hwal Kim, Sol is a high-grade perfume composed of premium natural ingredients. With its earthy and woody base, it avoids synthetic sweetness in favor of depth and groundedness—resonating with the process of artistic creation.
The scent draws on Eastern philosophy, particularly the concept of “Wood” (木) in the Five Elements theory, symbolizing growth, roots, and expansion. Its bottle and logo design feature the handwriting of BHAK’s director, Bryan Bhak, reflecting a personal and generational touch.
