공간이든 마음이든 어딘가로 침잠하다 다시 깨어나는 듯한 느낌, 강수희의 그림이 주는 첫 인상이다. 이러한 화면은 심해와 같은 깊은 어둠 속으로 하강했다가 다시 수면 위로 올라오는 기분을 불러일으킨다. 어둠과 빛, 하강과 상승, 고요와 긴장처럼 서로 이질적인 시각적·감각적 요소가 결합된 작품은 이처럼 하나의 심리적 이미지로서 작가의 상태를 대변하는 듯하다.작가 노트에 따르면, 그는 제주에서 자연을 관찰하고 풍경을 그리며 쇠약해진 마음에 새로운 감각을 경험했다고 말한다. 지속된 불안에 시달려온 작가는 이를 극복하기 위한 방편으로, ‘아름다운 것, 곧 자연’을 마주하면 나아질 수 있지 않을까 하는 막연한 기대를 안고 제주로 향했고, 실제로 그 선택은 그에게 새로운 성찰을 가져왔다. 《위장된 고백》 은 강수희 자신을 지배했던 생각과 감정, 그리고 그로부터 형성된 삶의 양상을 기록한 일종의 고백록과 같은 풍경화를 선보인다.각각의 풍경은 작가가 제주에서 관찰한 하늘, 바다, 섬, 숲과 같이 어떤 자연의 보편적인 모습을 바탕으로 하되, 해가 지고 어둠이 찾아오는 사이의 시간대를 배경으로 한다. 빛이 물러나는 순간, 푸른 밤하늘은 의식과 움직임이 잦아드는 고요한 시간을 알린다. 이때의 풍경은 완전한 밤으로 나아가지 않는다. 화면에는 깨어 있는 또 다른 시간대가 삽입되어 있는데, 강렬한 햇빛이나 별빛, 자동차와 집 안의 불빛과 같은 요소들이 그것이다. 이러한 모티프는 구체적인 서사를 제시하기보다, 감각과 정서를 응축한 이미지로서 다양한 감정을 환기시키며 작품 특유의 화면을 구성하는데 더욱 초점을 두고있다. 어둠의 경계가 모호한, 빛과 어둠이 교차하는 풍경은 그 자체가 배경이자 전경으로서 하나의 화면을 이루는 것이다. 강수희의 풍경은 이러한 복잡 미묘한 장면을 통해 해소되고 발화되는 감각들을 포착한다. 어둠을 뚫고 나오는 빛의 장면들을 변주하며, 작가가 말하고자 한 것은 무엇일까.“사실 풍경이란 게 제 안에서 복잡하고 거대한 것이라 딱 한 마디로 정의하기가 어렵다. 처음엔 마음의 평온을 찾기 위해 바라 봤고, 그 다음엔 내면을 투영하는 자리의 언어가 되었고, 어느 순간엔 그 생각의 논리를 넘어, 풍경 자체의 압도적인 아름다움에 다시 감동하는 경험이 생기는 것 같다. 그래서 풍경은 무대인 동시에, 저를 다시 세상의 아름다움으로 연결해 주는 매개체이다. 그래서 이 모든 걸 담아 그릴 때, 작업이 ‘세상-나-세상’의 순환이 되는 것 같아서, 저 스스로 살고 있구나 하는 감동이 되고있다”강수희는 자연을 향한 경탄의 순간에 자력으로 해결되지 않았던 감정의 응어리가 해소되는 경험을 한다. 서로 상충되지만 결코 불안하지만은 않은 풍경의 형상을 통해 확고한 평온의 상태로 인도되는 것이다. 이러한 미학적 경험, 즉 자연으로의 몰입은 단순한 탐미적 아름다움에 머물지 않는다. 이는 자연이란 매개를 통과하며 자신과 화해하고 세상과 연결되며 존재의 의미를 사유하는 과정이라 할 수 있다.이처럼 강수희의 풍경은 어둠 속에서도 길을 잃지 않고 중심을 잡으려 했던 의지의 기록이자, 내면에서 충돌하고 화해하며 쌓아 올린 감정의 지층을 우회적으로 드러내 보인다. 결국 작가의 회화는 표면적으로는 실존의 어둠을 ‘위장’하고 있는 듯 보이지만, 궁극적으로는 어둠을 밝히며 우리를 진보케 하는 희망의 ‘고백’ 이라할 수 있을 것이다.글 l 임소희 (BHAK 큐레이터)

His paintings reduce unnecessary narrative elements and focus instead on the structures through which emotion is conveyed. This approach appears most clearly in the controlled surfaces, the careful balance of the composition, and the way color is used to define the atmosphere of each work.His visual foundations come from the perfectionism of the Spanish Renaissance, the psychological intensity associated with Francis Bacon, and the calm and contemplative quality often found in Eastern art. The background colors that long characterized his paintings have served as visual devices that heighten both symbolic meaning and emotional clarity. Red has represented vitality and spirituality, while black has expressed silence and a desire for the absolute. More recent works, including the A Love Is Pop series, introduce a brighter palette and a more immediate visual tone. Although the precise composition remains, the shift in color and expression signals a move toward a more open and contemporary visual world.In Your Eyes focuses on this moment of transition. The young, anonymous models he often encounters in daily life carry a sense of neutrality and ambiguity. Their gaze does not reveal a story but instead creates a quiet emotional field that the viewer steps into. What emerges is not a psychological portrait, but a structure of feeling built through the simplicity of looking.His realism does not aim to reproduce what already exists. It constructs an image that feels both unfamiliar and inevitable, a face that has never existed yet seems to belong to memory.
