함섭(1942-2024)은 한국의 전통 재료와 서구적 추상회화를 조화시켜 한지회화 작업으로 국내외 미술계에서 주목을 받은 작가다. 함섭은 서양화과를 나왔지만 유화나 아크릴화가 가진 표현의 한계를 뛰어넘고 싶어 끊임없이 재료와 주제에 골몰했다. 그 결과 함섭은 한지를 캔버스로 삼고 물감과 붓 대신 솔이나 방망이로 물에 적신 고서, 수제 한지, 닥나무 껍질 등을 콜라주처럼 뜯어 붙이며 두드리고 짓이겨 다시 화면 위에 재구성하는 표현 방식을 탄생시켰다. 한지라는 토속재료와 전통 색채에 서구적 추상미학을 조화시킨 함섭의 작품을 해외에서는 ‘회화 조각’으로 부르며 주목했다. 한민족의 삶과 문화, 정체성을 담아낸 함섭의 작업은 단순히 한국적인 정체성 뿐만 아니라 작가만의 예술의 당위성을 찾기 위한 고민의 흔적으로서 볼 수 있다.

Ham Sup was a Korean artist who gained attention for blending traditional Korean materials with Western abstract painting, particularly through his hanji paintings. Seeking to transcend the limitations of oil and acrylic paints, he developed a unique technique of collaging, tearing, and reassembling materials such as hanji, old books, and handmade paper. His works reflect not only Korean identity but also a personal quest to find the necessity of his art beyond national identity.
