Kim Tschang-Yeul

For the drip painter Kim Tschang-Yeul (1929-2021), droplets symbolize various layers of meaning: they represent his longing for family and homeland, act as a medium for cleansing the dark history of Korea, and serve to awaken the principles of the universe. Kim frequently used materials with distinct physical qualities, such as sand, wood, paper, and newspaper, as the actual foundation of his works. The incorporation of these materials enhances the luminous form and shadows of the droplets, highlighting the realism in his pieces. Among his various series, the Recurrence series stands out, created after Kim turned sixty, reflecting his return to the origin of life. The works express his autobiographical reflection on starting life anew from its beginning, while seeking the wisdom and teachings of life, the laws of the universe, and the lessons to be learned from the world.

물방울 화가 김창열(1929-2021)에게 물방울은 그리운 가족과 고향을 상징하기도, 어두웠던 한국의 역사를 정화하는 혹은 삼라만상의 이치를 일깨우는 매개체의 역할을 하며 여러 층위의 의미를 지닌다. 김창열은 모래, 나무, 종이, 신문 등 물성이 두드러지는 소재를 작품의 실제 바탕으로 자주 사용하였다. 이러한 매체의 도입은 물방울의 영롱한 형태와 그림자를 부각시켜 작품의 사실감을 돋보이게 한다. 다양한 연작 중에서 특히 <회귀 Recurrence> 연작은 작가가 환갑 이후 인생의 원점으로 돌아왔다는 주제를 담아 제작되었다. 작품은 생의 원점에서 다시 삶을 시작한다는 작가의 자전적 성찰과 삶과 우주의 법칙 등, 세상의 지혜와 교훈을 구하고 배울 것들을 말하고 있다.
